December welcomed Geometry with Jan. Both were still incredibly confused. They took their seats at the back of the room as Mr. Kops projected the bell work onto the screen.
"What went on there?" Jan whispered.
"I don't know… I was just trying to help."
"Those were those freak kids huh?"
"They're not freaks. They're actually really nice… I bet… when you get to know them…"
"Didn't look like it to me… and what's with that girl being so cold?"
"Maybe it's because she has poor circulation…"
"I'll say, she wasn't even bleeding…"
"Don't make fun of her like that!"
"My gosh, I can't believe you're even defending them! If you ruin my social life-."
"Hey you two, bell work…" Kops said in a monotone voice.
They were quiet a moment, "Aw, looks like D has a little crush on Annabelle Lee…"
"Please be quiet December, January… let's get off to a good start…"
The rest of class December never returned fire to his sister's comment. He knew full well that he had some kind of infatuation with those people… even more so with Annabelle Lee. She seemed different among them. Something bothered him about them. It wasn't that they were scary- they were oddly gorgeous in appearance- it was something he couldn't understand. Annabelle Lee was cold in body and in her personality. But why?
When the two arrived out front in the pick up bay after school, January kicked at a crushed can in front of her unwilling to talk to her brother. December stared at the pavement contemplating. The wind picked up and the slight drizzle increased to a light rain. Looking at her brother Jan opened her mouth as if to say something. Nothing came and she remained silent. Their mother's car rolled up beside the curb.
"Hey, how was school?" Carol hummed as Jan hopped in the back seat.
"Ugh," the weary teen grunted.
As December went to climb in the passenger's seat the wind picked up again… bringing with it his infatuation. She rushed into the street while the rain spattered against all solid objects. December closed the car door, not getting in.
"Hey, what are you doing?" his mother called through a crack in the window.
"I'll call you later!" he crowed over the rain.
"Why?"
"I'll call you later!" December splashed after the figure.
Visibility became less clear. Annabelle ran in front of oncoming cars aware they'd stop in time; if they didn't she did not care. December was only a short walk away but he was trying his best to keep up with her. Nearly being hit four times and falling into the rising water twice. He was drenched. Annabelle Lee made it to her red Nisan truck. She opened the driver's door and closed herself inside the cab. Her backpack dripped water off its weatherproof skin.
She looked out her window. A silhouette trampled through the mist and showers till he was at the truck. December was sopping wet staring at Annabelle Lee who stared back startled. He went to the truck and tapped on her window. His sopping  jacket sleeve covered his fist. She simply boggled back. He went around the front of the truck and opened the passenger side door. He closed himself in with Annabelle Lee in the cab of the truck. No retaliation, just a murderous silence.
"How was your day?" he broke the voiceless barrier.
After a long pause, "It was fine…" she sighed, "Yours?"
A second barrier fell, "It was alright. Still getting used to this place and the people in it."
Annabelle nodded, "Yeah… Th- thanks for trying to help me earlier."
"Oh no problem," a third wall fell, "I thought you were hurt or something and I wanted to help, you know?"
"Uh huh…"
"So uh… what's up with this club you're in? Getting called out of classes and what not…"
She looked at him water trickling through her silky hair, "It's sort of exclusive…"
"I bet…"
"Why did you follow me?"
"I don't know… I guess I wanted to make sure you were okay… are you okay?"
"Yeah I'm… I'm very well… thank you," the last barrier had been breached.
From there on out conversation would be easy, "Good. My sister and I were worried that you would get an infection or something."
"Oh no, it's fine really. See?"
"Guess you're right," no trace, "Why did you run from the cafeteria? Smells make you sick?"
"No I had homework to finish…"
"Oh…"
"Sorry… I know I was kind of rude… and that my… friends don't like you."
"No it's fine. I totally understand," he didn't understand in the slightest.
"You didn't get your lunch, did you?"
"No but I'm okay."
"Well you sounded hungry earlier."
"Oh yeah I guess. I'm not really hungry…" December's gut said different by screaming loudly.
Annabelle Lee giggled, "You want to go to someplace to get a something to eat?"
"Uh… sure? Where at?"
"This little shop out on Rita… the Birdcage. My friends and I go there a lot."
Annabelle turned the key in the ignition. The engine roared to life. She backed out of her parking space without trouble.
"You can see through all this rain?"
"Don't have too- no one is on the road with the weather like this."
The truck turned sharply and accelerated out of the school lot. Annabelle drove down the highway with ease.
"How long have you had your license?"
"Awhile… do you have yours?"
"Not yet… been procrastinating… my sister thinks it's funny 'cause she already has hers."
"I see…" Annabelle Lee slowed as the truck approached a stoplight.
A tiny ringing sound emerged from December's backpack.
"Oh, sorry got to take this."
"No worries…" she smiled in response.
"Hello?" he spoke into his cell phone.
"Where are you?"
He sighed, "I said I'd call you mom."
"Well Jan says you're chasing after some creepy little girl who's cold as ice…"
Annabelle turned, "Well tell Jan to go pound sand. She doesn't know what she's talking about. Listen I'm going to be home… later okay?"
"Where are you going December James?"
"To a place to get something to eat. It's called the Birdcage…"
"Who are you going with?"
"Annabelle Lee."
"That's the creepy girl!" Jan's voice was audible in the background.
"Shut up January!"
"Well can I talk to her?"
"T- talk to her?" Annabelle looked at December, "Okay I guess. She wants to talk with you."
"Okay…" December handed the cell phone to her, "Hello Ms. Peachly."
"Hi, are you Annabelle Lee?"
"Yes."
"It's nice to know December is making friends with new people. Thanks for helping him out."
"Oh- of course Ms. Peachly."
"Please call me Carol."
"Alright Carol. I'll bring December back around eight, is that okay?"
"That depends… does December have any homework?"
"No," December grinned.
"He says no."
"Then his curfew is eleven. Have a good time D!"
"Bye mom!" he took the phone and closed it, "God, crazy lady."
Annabelle smiled, "Well I thought it was funny," they continued down the road.
"Sorry about my sister… she has problems."
"Oh, it's okay. I get stuff like that on occasion."
"You do? Why?"
"I don't know. I guess people fear what they don't know and making fun of it is the only way they feel empowered over their fear."
December looked at her, "Well… I'm not afraid…"
